What are Skylight blinds?

Adding blinds to your skylight, rooflight or roof lantern can be the perfect addition to keep your living area cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Skylight blinds can be the perfect way to solve overheating problems in your extension or orangery. With many extensions being built with glass sections to allow light in to the living space there is sometimes a need to control the level of light and UV that can come through the skylights.

Whats the difference between a skylight, rooflight or roof lantern?

From a blinds perspective there isnt much difference. Skylight and Rooflights are pretty much the same thing, they are either flat or pitched to follow the roof line. Skylights are often a bit smaller than rooflights. Roof lanterns on the other hand usually refer to a raised section of your ceiling with the glass section higher than the ceiling level.

What ever you call it we have probably got a solution to shade it

What are the options available for my window?

There are three broad categories of blind available for your rooflight windows.

  • Cellular blinds - there are various options that fall into the Cellular blinds category. Also often refered to as Duette, Honeycomb or thermal blinds they are all basically the same thing. The blinds use a Cellular fabric which has very good insulation properties while also offering excellent UV reflectance. The Cellular rooflight blinds and the TrueVue blinds below are both examples of Cellular blinds.
  • ZIP roller blinds - these are the most expensive option, they consist or roller blind system that is mounted on to a shelving system to remove any gaps around the edges. A large roller blind is housed in a cassette at one end, as the blind is operated the fabric is drawn out across the opening with the fabric trapped in side channels. This gives a very good blackout effect if used with a blackout fabric.
  • Velux blinds - these are blinds designed to fit directly to Velux and other skylight window manufacturers windows. They are available in various blind types such as roller blinds, thermal blinds etc.
